It has been demonstrated by studies that a large number of patients who
go to their physician do not receive a proper headache diagnosis. Dr.
Loftus believes that this is because of a combination of factors. The
most important factor is the patient's physician does not have the time
to take an adequate headache history. In addition, some physicians are
not familiar enough with the International Classification of Headache
Disorders II to make a proper diagnosis in some of the more difficult
cases.
While it is not possible to diagnose over the internet, it is possible
to obtain some headache history and perform an analysis which will aid
the physician in making a proper diagnosis. This analysis is geared only
to those who are 16 years old or older and are having distinct recurrent
headaches. New onset headaches should be seen and examined by a physician.
New onset severe headaches are potential emergencies. If you or your
loved
one is having a new onset severe headache, please go to an emergency
room. It may not be necessary but it is better to be safe than sorry.
Dr. Loftus has been trying to get funding for this computer based analysis
since the fourth quarter of 2002. At the end of the exercise, you will
be asked to donate to this effort but it is strictly voluntary. Again,
this is not meant to be a substitute for seeing your physician and diagnosis
of headache type cannot be made by history alone. Also, this software
went onto the internet on December 26, 2003. If you or your physician
feels there are errors in the software, please print out your sheet, make
any comments you like, and fax to Dr. Loftus at 713-394-2705 or email
the pages to study@loftusmd.com.
