We performed an open-label, observational study using historical baseline
data and a prospective treatment phase in order to assess patient treatment
satisfaction pre- and post- triptan treatment with 50mg Sumatriptan tablets
and preference for Sumatriptan compared to previous non-triptan therapy
for migraine headache over a three month period. Patients were recruited
from an internal medicine subspecialty clinic either by recommendation
of their physician or by responding to flyers offering the study in physician
and laboratory waiting areas and a monthly bill insert. We included patients
older than 18 years but not more than 65 years of age with at least a
1-year history of disabling headaches meeting the I.H.S. criteria for
migraine with/without aura (I.H.S. 1.1, 1.2) and with a frequency of 2-8
migraines per month. Patients were free from active cardiovascular disease
and were previously using non-triptans for first-line migraine treatment.
Patients were asked to complete a questionnaire detailing their level
of satisfaction regarding varying aspects of their prior migraine care
as well as medical resource utilization and missed employment. Patients
were asked what therapy they were using for migraine and why they were
not using triptan therapy. Patients were then given Sumatriptan 50 mg
capsules. They returned for an interim visit at one-month and then a final
visit at 3 months. They then completed a questionnaire detailing their
level of satisfaction regarding varying aspects of their prior migraine
care as well as medical resource utilization and missed employment. They
were then asked their preference between Sumatriptan and their prior therapy.
