Objective: To compare overall patient satisfaction of migraine management
pre- and post- Sumatriptan treatment with 50mg tablets versus non-triptan
compounds (prescription or OTC) in the treatment of migraine headaches.
Methods: We performed an open-label, observational study using historical
baseline data and a prospective treatment phase in order to assess patient
treatment satisfaction pre- and post- triptan treatment with 50mg Sumatriptan
tablets and preference for Sumatriptan compared to previous non-triptan
therapy for migraine headache over a three month period. Results: Of the
21 patients initially enrolled in the study, 15 completed the study (1
never had a migraine, 2 – never returned questionnaires, 3 Sumatriptan
failures). 13 of 15 patients preferred sumatriptan, 1 preferred their
prior therapy, and 1 stated no preference. Compared to their prior therapy,
fewer ER visits and office visits for migraine were utilized by patients
during the study. Among those patients who were employed, there were fewer
worked days missed because of migraine and fewer days working with migraine.
Conclusion: Compared to non-triptan therapy, oral Sumatriptan 50 mg therapy
results in increased patient satisfaction, decreased medical service utilization,
decreased sick-days/days missed from work, and a decrease in the number
of days having to work with a migraine.
