The most common type of migraine is Migraine without aura which is also
known as common migraine.
According to ICHD (International Classification of Headache Disorders,
Edition 2) criteria (age 16 and above), you must fulfill the following
to be diagnosed with Common migraine:
- At least 5 attacks fulfilling B-D
- Headache attacks lasting 4-72 hours (untreated or unsuccessfully treated)
- Headaches have at least two of the following characteristics:
- Unilateral location
- Pulsating quality
- Moderate or severe intensity (moderate generally defined as inhibiting daily activities and severe as prohibiting daily activities.)
- Aggravation by walking stairs or similar routine physical activity
- During the headache at least one of the following:
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Photophobia (lights seem unusually bright) and phonophobia (sounds seem unusually loud)
- No other diagnosis to explain the headache.
Again, the purpose of the criteria is to make sure someone with a different
disease is not improperly diagnosed with migraine and that is why 5 headaches
are required to make the diagnosis of migraine.
